Water and animal feeds can be contaminated bypathogenic microorganisms, during both storageand distribution. Plant-derived raw materials, pelletedand crumbled animal feeds and water samplesfrom four Italian regions have been analysedfor microbiological and physical-chemical parameters,to obtain a view of the microbial characteristicsof raw materials and final products. Water,raw materials and feeds were all negative for Salmonellaspp., while yeasts and moulds were abundantin cereal grain, flour, and silage, presumably dueto unsuitable storage conditions. Coliforms andenterococci counts were variable in water samples,with higher values during summer.
