On June 29th 2015 in a 15-year-old elderly nephropathic cat, feline morbillivirus RNA has been detected by RT-PCR whereas other pathogens previously shown to be related with kidney disease of cats were absent. Feline Morbillivirus has been demonstrated to be associated with tubule-interstitial nephritis (TIN) in cats. TIN involves primary injury to renal tubules and interstitium and it is the most common cause of renal failure and one of the leading causes of deaths in cats. However, the causes of TIN in cats remain so far mainly unknown. Remarkably, in this report we describe the first molecular detection of feline morbillivirus in a domestic cat in Europe. So far indeed, feline morbilliviruses have been detected only in Japan and Hong Kong. Furthermore, the whole genome sequence of this feline morbillivirus has been obtained by next generation sequencing and compared with the sole extant fareastern sequences publicly available.
