Abstract: Violence in Peru in the eighties and nineties caused massive withdrawal from thecountryside, especially in the south-central zone of Peru, due to the abuse perpetrated towardsthe peasants, mainly indigenous people. The victims of violence, including desaparecidos anddead people, are 70.000, according to the conclusions of the Peruvian Truth and JusticeCommission. As a consequence, millions of people began to migrate to the coast and the maintowns, concentrating in the capital, Lima, in search of protection, safety and support. In thePeruvian towns, the social problems of the displaced people caused new occasions of violenceand discrimination. This paper takes into consideration: what chances the displaced peoplehave (settle in the towns or return to the countryside); the role of the State in the rehabilitationof the victims; the activity of other social subjects, local or international, towards thedisplaced people. In conclusion, reflections on the event show how the re-emerging questionof indigenous people is one of the most important social issues in Peru.[...]
