Since the end of last century several international organizations, whether universal or regional, have « gone public », that is have intensified their external commu- nication activities, by establishing specific internal offices, collaborating with independent specialized agencies, using digital communication, such as websites and/or social media. This has enhanced their external accountability, transparency and visibility, as well as contributed to the effectiveness of their regulatory (binding and/or non-binding) and operational activities. However, their credibility has still been debated. Criticism was recurrent during the Covid-19 pandemic and some armed conflicts, sometimes because of infodemic and fake news. This paper illustrates these points, also in light of increasing digitalization, and shows a number of reasons why a further enhancement of communi- cation activities of international organizations would benefit States, in terms of the sustainability of mass media, digital ones included, and the capacity of international organizations to coordinate international relations through harmonization and global governance based on trust.

Abstract
Since the end of last century several international organizations, whether universal or regional, have « gone public », that is have intensified their external commu- nication activities, by establishing specific internal offices, collaborating with independent specialized agencies, using digital communication, such as websites and/or social media. This has enhanced their external accountability, transparency and visibility, as well as contributed to the effectiveness of their regulatory (binding and/or non-binding) and operational activities. However, their credibility has still been debated. Criticism was recurrent during the Covid-19 pandemic and some armed conflicts, sometimes because of infodemic and fake news. This paper illustrates these points, also in light of increasing digitalization, and shows a number of reasons why a further enhancement of communi- cation activities of international organizations would benefit States, in terms of the sustainability of mass media, digital ones included, and the capacity of international organizations to coordinate international relations through harmonization and global governance based on trust.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
