The female image and the thought of gender difference changed radically during the second half of the twentieth century, even in the Italian context. The question underlying this choice is linked to a possible greater freedom in terms of expression of both the sung contents and the appearance of the women/singers, as artists. On the other hand, from the sociological perspective, the methodological hypothesis is related to having been awarded talented women yes, but corresponding to an acceptable gender stereotype in the dominant Italian context in a given era, or verifying whether there has been an opening to the talent itself and the personal expression of the female artists.

Abstract

The female image and the thought of gender difference changed radically during the second half of the twentieth century, even in the Italian context. Music and specifically the Italian Song Festival have been chosen as the terrain of choice for observing the evolution of this change.
