Abstract

Martha Nussbaum’s “upheavals of thought” is an expression that summarizes in an exemplary way a path of philosophical analysis of intelligence in emotions and through emotions, between depths, heights and unevenness, for a theory of political action and for the understanding of our place in the world. Cultivating the humanity that we are, and that we are called to realize, is a paidetic commitment to recognize, value, transform and orient the intelligent power of passions. Emotions “shake”, “lift” human thought, providing motivations for acting or not acting, and therefore must be conside red as a fundamental part of a philosophical-political theory. A terrain in which human power and finitude, impulse and reasonableness weave the watermark of thought and action, rejecting any apollonian vision and recognizing emotions as a disturbing function within their cognitive-evaluative conception; but also a fundamental role in the relation ship between liberal education, social justice and human dignity. But, mostly, through the conscious and intelligent exercise of emotions we makes ourselves aware of our own and others’ vulnerability, that challenges us deeply: what living beings should I consider similar to me, endowed with the same fragility and potential as I can create compassionate and supportive bonds? A question that should return to the center of politics.
