Foodborne diseases are a global public health issue due to the high amount of food produced and consumed worldwide every day. Bacteria and their toxins, viruses, parasites, and protozoa are the main biological hazards causing acute and chronic illness. To evaluate the trends of foodborne diseases of biological origin in the European Union (EU), data collected by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) are analyzed and discussed, in particular comparing 2020 and 2021, the last 2 years that data are available. Information on the food vehicles that caused or are implicated by “strong evidence” and outbreak settings are provided to improve management of food safety risks.
