Abstract

Regional differences in fertility ageing in Italy and regional homogeneity with regard to late fertility dynamics are analysed. A decomposition model is used to discriminate the effect of different fertility components on the evolution of the proportion of fertility realized at age 30+. The rise in the proportion of fertility realized at higher ages is initially related to the decrease of fertility intensity at younger ages is initially related to the decrease of fertility intensity at younger ages, then, since the mid 1980s, is associated with an increase of fertility at age 30+. A multiway analysis confirms the presence of persistent differences in late fertility dynamics across Italian regions.[...]
