The paper aims at investigating the relationship between corporate governance in sport organizations and the gender-stereotypes of sports’ disciplines and if and how institutional context in which they operate and develop mediate this relationship. Through the lens of Institutional Theory, the study investigates a sample of 383 Italian firms operating in the professional sports sector. To empirically analyse the relationship, we use a moderation model in which the effect of sports’ stereotypes on CG composition of sport organizations is moderated by the regional context institutions. Due to the gender stereotypes that still belong to different sport activities, we hypothesize, respectively, that male- and feminine-stereotyped sports positively affect male- and female-dominant CG composition and that institutional context moderate these relationships. This study provides insights for policy makers interested in promoting gender equality in sport governance by helping them to better understand the dynamics underlying their decision processes.
