Soy “Milk” (SM) and other plant-based drinks are an important substitute for people who are allergic to cow milk protein (CMPA) and lactose intolerant. For this reason, plant-based dairy-like products have to be checked to prevent potential adulterations resulting from the addition of casein and/or whey proteins to these products. Official analytical techniques currently used in the control of dairy products are based on the determination of milk fat and protein composition. However, isoelectrofocusing (IEF) and electrophoresis are not applicable to vegetable drinks, due to interferences of the protein bands of vegetable proteins with the bands of γ-casein. In this work, a rapid immunological-based method (lateral flow assay) was tested for the qualitative detection of cow’s IgG in four different plant-based drinks (soy, rice, almond and oat) artificially-contaminated with cow’s milk.
