The university modernization process has introduced a new concept of such institutions: the “Smarter University”. According to this concept, the new role of universities in modern society consists not only of cooperation with other actors focusing on social, cultural and economic activities but also the wide use of web-based technologies to support traditional teaching and research, as well as engagement and social interaction (Coccoli et al., 2014). The Smarter University model is the result of technological innovations and, in particular, digital tools that facilitate interconnection, networking and sharing between individuals and groups (Coccoli et al., 2014) and increase the ability of universities to contribute to economic and social development. The new concept of the university has attracted research attention aimed at finding appropriate models to measure the performance of such institutions. In this paper, we develop a model to measure the contribution of smarter universities to social, economic and cultural development. We adopt an integrated approach that links performance measurement to the smart university’s mission and its new business model.
Il processo di modernizzazione dell'università ha introdotto un nuovo concetto di tali istituzioni: la “Smarter University”. Secondo questo concetto, il nuovo ruolo delle università nella società moderna consiste non solo nella cooperazione con altri attori incentrati su attività sociali, culturali ed economiche, ma anche nell'ampio uso di tecnologie basate sul web per supportare l'insegnamento e la ricerca tradizionali, nonché l'impegno e interazione sociale (Coccoli et al., 2014). Il modello Smarter University è il risultato di innovazioni tecnologiche e, in particolare, di strumenti digitali che facilitano l'interconnessione, il networking e la condivisione tra individui e gruppi (Coccoli et al., 2014) e aumentano la capacità delle università di contribuire allo sviluppo economico e sociale. Il nuovo concetto di università ha attirato l'attenzione della ricerca volta a trovare modelli appropriati per misurare le prestazioni di tali istituzioni. In questo documento, sviluppiamo un modello per misurare il contributo delle università più intelligenti allo sviluppo sociale, economico e culturale. Adottiamo un approccio integrato che collega la misurazione delle prestazioni alla missione dell'università intelligente e al suo nuovo modello di business.
