The last decade of the 20th century have been characterized by significant migration movements. The effects are due to globalization, technological changes and new means of transport. Furthermore, some dramatic political events have determined and facilitated the flow of people leaving their own country in search for better living conditions.Hence, the volume and structure of international migration and the number of countries involved in human movements have increasingly risen. Italy has also been involved in this complex phenomenon to such an extent that it can be considered one of the major social and demographic issues in the last decade.Many meetings have periodically taken place between the political representatives of the provinces of Ascoli and Teramo in order to measure and analyse subjects regarding possible common initiatives in the field of economic and social development. In fact, there is fully awareness that a proper and profitable cooperation about some aspects of development may represent an important condition able to enhance greater promotion of a positive and synergetic growth of these two areas – very similar as for geographical features.Common studies, talks, meetings, exchange of views have followed one another in the last decades, since the so-called “middle-Adriatic area” came out; then an even more successful name has been found – the “four-sided area” – because it is suggestive of the provincial capitals as starting points up to the coast where San Benedetto and Giulianova are located.Within such a context and in the light of more recent migratory dynamics, this paper aims at examining the issue of migration under a systemic perspective as well: in fact, we strongly believe in the mutual advantage of analyzing crucial issues, thus going beyond a general, widespread superficiality and administrative ordinariness.[...]
