This article addresses local sport both as local practice and tradition. It attempts to grasp the importance of local sport in a broader framework of identity production. Building upon Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of force fields, the analysis highlights the high level of heteronomy to which lo- cal sport is subject. The article introducean example of local traditional sports as a rediscovery of community focus of the game. It concludes that the level of autonomy of local sport can act as an indicator of a community’s welfare and, indirectly, of its potential for local development.[...]
