Abstract
Animal welfare is a measure unit designed to assess how animals are taken care of. All animal species could be raised in optimal conditions and with high welfare standards; however, this does not happen for economic reasons. The need to assess animal welfare is driven by ethical, economical, legal and also health reasons. No unified approach to animal welfare assessment exists and currently the most commonly used models estimate the degree of animal welfare by analysing several indicators at the same time. In spite of the existence of such models, man often has an anecdotal view of animal suffering. According to some recent studies in the field of comparative psychology, animals show complex cognitive behaviours, such as the ability to attribute mental states to other individuals and to understand their motivations, suggesting that animal welfare assessment should include not only the state of the animal’s physiology, but also its feelings, emotions and cognitive and social needs.[...]I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
