The European Investment Bank (EIB) and regional development banks such as the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the African Development Bank (AFDB) and the European Bank of Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), though not investment actors themselves, support public and private investments within and outside (in the case of the EIB) their Member States in such a way as to protect non-economic interests. This is established in their statutes but it also emerges from their activity, although in different terms. The present study explores the relevant statutory provisions of the EIB and the latter’s subsequent practice in this field and it tries to understand the Bank’s actual role in the protection of such interests while putting it in context of the other development banks.
