The introductory essay outlines the theoretical and critical framework of the volume devoted to Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale forty years after the novel’s publication. Taking as its starting point the work’s enduring relevance and its capacity to generate new readings, rewritings, and adaptations, the essay identifies some of the volume’s central concerns: the dynamics of power inscribed in language and in the practices of hegemonic culture; the role of memory and imagination as forms of resistance; the ethical and political implications of storytelling; the relationship between dystopia, speculative fiction, and science fiction; and the transformation of the novel across different languages and media. The essay also introduces the volume’s two-part structure, focusing respectively on the strategies of resistance enacted in and through Atwood’s text and on the forms of regeneration of its narrative universe across different media and transmedia contexts.
