The essay outlines the mission and activities of METArte, an Interuniversity Research Centre established in 2022 to promote an interdisciplinary approach to cultural heritage, bridging humanistic knowledge and technological innovation. METArte’s work is structured around three main areas: scientific diagnostics, with a focus on multispectral imaging and the development of open-access databases on artistic materials; experimental museography, aimed at enhancing accessibility and inclusion through multisensory devices, virtual environments, and interactive digital tools; and university education, conceived as a hands-on laboratory that integrates theoretical learning with practical, interdisciplinary experience. The essay also highlights a series of institutional collaborations and applied projects, including museum diagnostic campaigns and the digital reconstruction of the Antiquarium Cesi. Finally, it presents future directions, notably the creation of the MetaMuseum, an innovative virtual space designed for accessible, participatory engagement with cultural heritage.
