This collective work focuses on the beliefs, religious practices, discourses, and representations regarding death in New Spain from the 16th to the 18th century. It comprises studies on Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz’s beliefs about the “Christian afterlife” and the fate of the soul; books on preparation for a fair death; spiritual awakenings, and guidelines for visiting the sick and administering extreme unction. It also explores the devotion to certain Franciscan friars, specially Sebastián de Aparicio, revered for having died as Saint Francis and for his incorrupt body. Furthermore, the book analyzes the funerary practices of Mexico City’s inhabitants through the documents kept in the Sagrario parish. The notion of "bad death" and its implications during the period are also revisited. Additionally, there is a chapter on the use, history and devotional practices surrounding a sculpture of death housed in the museum of the former convent of Yanhuitlán, in Oaxaca.
