The essay deals with Sorokin’s analysis of love by examining his main work on the subject (The Ways and Power of Love), so as to propose a reflection on its heuristic effectiveness. Moreover, by referring to the concept of “pure relationship” (Giddens) and to Agape as a regime of action (Boltanski), the essay tries to assess the influence Sorokin exerted on contemporary social theory. The analysis suggests the necessity to move beyond the concept of altruistic love as outlined by Sorokin, in the belief that sociology, as other human sciences, is a cumulative science, which progresses by remembering, preserving and at the same time reviewing the classics of the discipline.

Abstract
The essay deals with Sorokin’s analysis of love by examining his main work on the subject (The Ways and Power of Love), so as to propose a reflection on its heuristic effectiveness. Moreover, by referring to the concept of “pure relationship” (Giddens) and to Agape as a regime of action (Boltanski), the essay tries to assess the influence Sorokin exerted on contemporary social theory. The analysis suggests the necessity to move beyond the concept of altruistic love as outlined by Sorokin, in the belief that sociology, as other human sciences, is a cumulative science, which progresses by remembering, preserving and at the same time reviewing the classics of the discipline.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
