Steam ships, new postal routes, railways and submarine telegraphy were the cornerstones of the infrastructural revolution that took place during the long 19th century and was able to reduce distances, shorten the length of journeys and connect even the most remote areas of the planet. A paradigmatic example of this period was undoubtedly Raffaele Rubattino’s shipping company. Established in 1840 in Genoa, the company on the one hand embodied the technical-scientific progress of the time and, on the other hand, was a prominent witness and at times the protagonist of the major political-social events of the time. Thanks to this, both the company’s domestic and foreign activities are closely intertwined and in turn linked to the complex global political framework of the 19th century. This needs an analysis that is no longer connected to a strictly national perspective.
