In this retrospective study, atypical localizations of Leishmania spp were described in 15 dogs. Identification of the protozoa was carried out by microscopic evaluation and/or PCR on osteoarticular (n=6), genital (n=2), haematological (n=2), and 1 each for lingual, pancreatic, duodenal, peritoneal, and hepatic sites. The results showed that the Leishmania in dogs may be localized in several districts and that leishmaniosis should always be considered as a differential diagnosis in endemic areas.

Abstract

In this retrospective study, atypical localizations of Leishmania spp were described in 15 dogs. Identification of the protozoa was carried out by microscopic evaluation and/or PCR on osteoarticular (n=6), genital (n=2), haematological (n=2), and 1 each for lingual, pancreatic, duodenal, peritoneal, and hepatic sites. The results showed that the Leishmania in dogs may be localized in several districts and that leishmaniosis should always be considered as a differential diagnosis in endemic areas.
