It takes Lili Elbe’s story as a starting point to take a quick look at the world of music and art in the 20th and 21st centuries, in search of transgender or nonbinary personalities such as Radclyffe Hall, Billy Tipton, Willmer ‘Little Axe’ Broadnax, Wendy Carlos, Romy Haag, Coccinelle, Cassils, Claude Cahun and Marcel Moore. The few names mentioned, which are only a portion of a much larger artistic panorama, can serve as food for thought on how the history of the arts, if read by abandoning the traditional canon, is full of personalities who have repeatedly confronted their non-normative gender identity, reacting to a context in which otherness is often the object of discrimination.
