This paper offers a geographical, demographical and historical background of South Africa, followed by a description of its complex multilingual and multicultural environment where each language enriches and peppers itself with words, phrases and idioms from the others. As regards English, the influence from other languages has always been marked, especially in the lexicon, and its close, ongoing contacts with the estimated twenty-five languages spoken within South African borders has given rise to SAfE – a variety in its own right in the huge scenario of World Englishes.[...]
