Red Cross, the largest humanitarian organization in the world, present in all the combat scenarios of the Great War, in Italy was equally active on both military and civil fronts. Recognizable in the trenches and at the rear, it became familiar even among the civilian population, who could find there more than an abstract willingness to help, a closeness to need and emergency of technical and human nature together. The men and women of the Red Cross, protagonists in this volume, all trained in service, were often leading figures in contemporary culture and science. It is enough to remember the figure of the Nobel prize winner Camillo Golgi. Perhaps even with a certain amount of unawareness, together they wrote a significant page in the history of humanitarianism of the early twentieth century. A history that is intertwined with the research of the first organizational forms of modern welfare. But where, when and how did the Italian Red Cross operate before the Great War until the consolidation of fascism in Italy? The collected essays explore moments and profiles of the presence of the Red Cross in some of the most dramatic years of our history.

Croce Rossa, la più grande organizzazione umanitaria del mondo, presente in tutti gli scenari di combattimento della Grande Guerra, in Italia fu parimenti attiva sui fronti sia militare sia civile. Riconoscibile in trincea e nelle retrovie, essa divenne familiare anche tra la popolazione civile, che poté trovarvi più che un’astratta disponibilità al soccorso, una prossimità al bisogno e all’emergenza di natura tecnica e umana insieme. Gli uomini e le donne di Croce Rossa, protagonisti in questo volume, tutti formati al servizio, furono spesso personalità di primo piano della cultura e della scienza contemporanee. Basterebbe ricordare la figura del premio Nobel Camillo Golgi.
