Veterinary Medicine and Biotechnology lexicons have an extensive and rich history in Latin and Greek languages, but it seems that, whereas new medical terms were formerly derived from classical roots, now they often consist of, partly or wholly, words borrowed from English. Thus, veterinarians and researchers from non-English speaking countries now have to choose whether importing these English terms directly or translating them into their own language.This paper aims at presenting highlights of a broader research project on the topic of the spread of English in Europe and in Italy in the specific domains of VetMed and BioTech as well as at considering whether such loanwords act as a factor of internationalization and as a link-agent among different languages or as a factor of opacity.[...]
