The article investigates the relations between the CIS and the UN in the various activities falling within the CIS mission of maintaining peace and stability. While such mission was established in general terms in the CIS Statute of 22 January 1993, the CIS was granted a role in this field already in the Kiev Agreement on Groups of Military Observers and Collective Peacekeeping Forces of February 1992 and later such role was fully developed in the “Concept for prevention and settlement of conflicts in the territory of States members of the CIS”, adopted in 1996. After going through the CIS rules on the relations with the UN in the pacific settlement of disputes, in non-coercive measures and in peace-keeping operations falling within the responsibility of the CIS, the article focuses on those relations as actually carried out in connection with the two Collective Peace-keeping Forces respectively established and operated in Tagikistan and in Abkatsia, Georgia. The analysis covers both the relevant UN Security Council resolutions and the activity of the UN missions respectively operating in those regions (UNMOT and UNOMIG), with the aim to shed light upon the actual implementation of UN Charter Chapter VIII as far as this particular regional organisation is concerned. It shows that, despite the general reluctance of CIS to act under the control or even in co-operation with the UN, the co-deployment of CIS Collective Peace-keeping Forces and UN missions has ensured that the former ones acted in accordance with the UN purposes to the maximum extent possible.[...]
