The essay examines the criticism moved to Mazzini by the Jesuit priests of «La Civiltà Cattolica» after the Roman Republic in 1849. The Jesuits criticized both the republican leader’s political projects and theories that undermined the temporal power of the Church as well as his proposals of reform of Catholic religion. The journal, for twenty years, moved a campaign against the founder of the Giovine Italia – who was considered a «vice-Satan» and a «fabricator of heresies» – in order to disrepute him. «La Civiltà Cattolica» used political and phlosophical journalism, the historical novels written by father Bresciani and the chronicle of the events regarding the Genoese patriot and his followers, constantly followed by the column Cronaca contemporanea.[...]
