The essay examines home, private and amateur movies as a source of history and it’s divided in three sections, strictly related to each other. In the first one, it tries to summarize the social history of home, private and amateur movies, studying its social uses and its changes, and the technological evolution of substandard films and amateur cameras. In the second one it examines the characteristics of this liminal type of audiovisuals, that, at the same time,tells an individual story and a collective history, even a social one. In the end it discusses few methods to use amateur and home movies as source of history.
