Fidelity is a moral concept that is also employed in the fields of politics and law using terms such as loyalty or allegiance. In order to avoid conceptual confusion, these varying interpretations should be kept distinct. From a specifically legal standpoint the duty of allegiance implies the observance of rules and norms that determine the identity of a given legal system and are instrumental in protecting the latter.
