Pieter Paul Rubens nel mercato artistico romano del XVIII secolo

During the 18th century Rubens was and remained a highly appreciated painter on the Roman art market. Paintings by Rubens, or attributed to Rubens, frequently occur in negotiations or in the documents of art dealers, often with high-level quotations. But what were the reasons for such success? The essay explains this commercial fortune through various factors, ie the key role played by the Flemish artist at the beginning of the 17th century, the flattering biography of Giovan Pietro Bellori of 1672, the profile of Carlo Maratti as a dealer, up to a series of museological operations around to 1750. Commercial fortune is the context of the presence in 1795 of an important painting by Rubens in the post-mortem inventory of James Durno, a painter-merchant of London origin who later settled in Rome: this painting, A lamentation on the body of Christ, is here identified with the canvas of analogous subject and size which entered the Borghese Gallery only a few years later.

Nel corso del XVIII secolo Rubens era e rimase un pittore molto ricercato sul mercato artistico romano. Quadri di Rubens, o attribuiti a Rubens ricorrono di frequente nelle trattative o nei documenti dei mercanti d'arte, spesso accompagnati da quotazioni di alto livello. Ma quali furono i motivi di tanto successo? Il saggio collega tale fortuna commerciale a vari fattori, dall'obiettivo ruolo giocato dall'artista fiammingo al principio del XVII secolo, alla biografia lusinghiera di Giovan Pietro Bellori del 1672, al profilo mercantile di Carlo Maratti, fino a una serie di operazioni museologiche intorno al 1750. La fortuna commerciale è il contesto entro cui porre la presenza nel 1795 di un importante quadro di Rubens nell'inventario post mortem di James Durno, un pittore-mercante di origine londinese ma poi espatriato a Roma: tale quadro, Un compianto di Cristo, nel saggio è identificato con la tela di analogo soggetto e dimensioni entrato in Galleria Borghese solo pochi anni più tardi.
